Jay Z knows something about timing.
He knows when to play to an audience and when to play with them.
He knows how much to give a crowd and how to leave them wanting a little more.
But there wasn't much more the rap mogul could have been expected to provide in his career-spanning, two dozen-plus song set Friday night at Philips Arena, where he last played solo in February 2010 (he returned in 2011 with Kanye West).
"I've been looking forward to this date since they announced the tour. We've been in L.A., we've been in Houston, but Atlanta is one of those special dates tonight," Jay Z said at the start of the 110-minute show, and for once, an obligatory fill-in-your-city-here comment sounded genuine.
That wife Beyonce and some of Atlanta's marquee names – Cee Lo Green, 2 Chainz, The-Dream and former tour mate Young Jeezy – came out to support him likely prompted Mr. Carter to add a little more zip to classics such as "U Don't Know" and "On to the Next One" and the generous handful of songs from his latest, "Magna Carta…Holy Grail," an album that is decent in studio form but whose songs sizzled live.
Backed by a four-piece band, including ace producer Timbaland on keyboards, Jay Z, 44, relied on their chameleonic abilities to churn out the rubbery funk undertones of "Crown" and "Picasso Baby" as he flashed grins between head-spinning verses.
Clad in various forms of black throughout the show – including a T-shirt emblazoned with Tom Ford's name across the back, athlete-style, and his backward Brooklyn Nets cap – Jay Z sauntered across the stage with effortless cool, his swagger inclusive rather than an arrogant disconnect from the sold-out crowd.
He's the type of performer who expresses more with the flick of his wrist than some of his peers do with elaborate sets and play acting.
Indeed, Jay Z's stage design of steel cages stacked with lights, platforms for his band to perch above and behind him and a pair of massive video screens that flanked the stage perfectly complemented his persona.
With the spotlight trained directly on him – save for a 10-minute interlude for Timbaland to remind the crowd of his '90s-era dominance as he played snippets of his most famous beats – Jay Z commanded the stage as he led a predictably super-charged version of "99 Problems," coated with serrated electric guitar, and traveled back to his 1996 debut for "Dead Presidents II."
Whether he was sashaying through the synthesized horns on "Tom Ford" (a live sound was missed on this one) or bopping through the affable bounce of "Big Pimpin' Vol. 3," Jay Z's rhythmic flow never failed to captivate. His off-kilter cadence cements his uniqueness and the sheer wordiness of his songs makes their memorization even more impressive.

"I told you, I got a million of these," Jay Z said in between "Dirt Off Your Shoulder" and "I Just Wanna Love U (Give it 2 Me)," reeling off lyrics while leaning down in a half-crouch, as if sharing the words conspiratorially with those in the front row.
Jay Z's efforts to connect with the crowd went beyond his frequent mentions of Atlanta. Moments before cavity-rattling bass ushered in "N***** in Paris," he instigated fans to stand on their chairs and clamor in the aisles ("Security stand down," he announced), which incited a controlled burst of energy that continued with the guitar grinder, "Public Service Announcement."

But it was during the five-song encore –- which began, fittingly enough, with the briskly unfurled "Encore" and included his timeless anthem, "Empire State of Mind" – that Jay Z took the extra step. Maybe the exercise didn't need to last 10 minutes, but by calling out several fans in the crowd, either for their noticeable clothing or their noticeable engagement during the show, Jay Z made a lot of people feel special.
"This is where I started and that's where I'll stay," he said, then continued to thank the crowd for taking the time and expense to attend a live performance. "I'll never take you for granted, I promise you."
That's a statement that would ring hollow coming from many performers, but Jay Z makes you believe, again, with perfect timing.
We already know that his wife is the queen of R&B-pop. But it's also pretty obvious who still wears the rap crown as king.

ALL HAIL the "KING"!
