'THE BOMBER' #RollingStone stirs up CONTROVERSY with accused Boston Bomber #DzhokharTsarnaev on the cover!! [details]

Posted: 18 Jul 2013 07:04 AM PDT

Accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's face on the cover of the latest Rolling Stone sparked a backlash against the magazine Wednesday in social media and in boardrooms around the country.

"THE BOMBER," the cover reads. "How a popular, promising student was failed by his family, fell into radical Islam and became a monster."

The photo of a tousle-haired, thinly goateed Tsarnaev is one the suspect posted online himself and has been picked up by other outlets. But a groundswell of criticism objecting to its prominent play emerged on platforms such as Twitter and Facebook and among leaders in Boston, where the marathon bombings killed three people, wounded more than 200 and led to a frantic manhunt that left a police officer dead.

Ed Kelly, president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Massachusetts, called it "insulting." Using Tsarnaev's booking photo might have been one thing, but a photo that shows "the innocence of youth" gives the wrong message, Kelly told CNN.

"He gave up any innocence he had on April 15, when he took the life of an innocent child, two women and then went on to execute a police officer," Kelly said.

"What he did to a city, a country, we're never going to forgive him for it," Kelly said. "We're not going to cower from it. It disturbs us that our media chooses to celebrate it."

Three prominent New England-based businesses -- CVS pharmacies, Stop & Stop, and Tedeschi Food Shops -- heard the public outcry and announced they will not sell that edition, which will be on newsstands soon.

Celebs have STRONG REACTIONS to 'Rolling Stone's latest ANTIC but 'RS' defends its choice:

(source: CNN.com)

"You always think as an artist 'If I ever get on the Rolling Stone I'll know I've made it!' That was until they started promoting terrorists," tweeted country star John Rich. Jack Osbourne called the decision "disgusting" adding, "this is exactly why these f**k heads commit terrorism so they can get the recognition they so desire" and urging for a boycott of the mag. His sister Kelly slammed Rolling Stone for "glorifying a monster." Motley Crue drummer Tommy Lee gave it a simple "WTF?", country crooner Brad Paisley called it "poor taste," and "Karate Kid" star Ralph Macchio retweeted: "Making a great album isn't enough to get you on the cover of rolling stone anymore. Blowing up kids is."

Rolling Stone, hit by a storm of criticism and boycotts over its cover treatment and glam photo of Boston bombing suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, defended itself Wednesday, saying it was within its tradition of "serious and thoughtful coverage" of important cultural and political issues.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino wrote to Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner accusing the magazine of offering Tsarnaev "celebrity treatment" and calling the cover "ill-conceived, at best," in that it supports the "terrible message that destruction gains fame for killers and their 'causes.'"

The letter calls the cover an obvious marketing strategy and concludes: "The survivors of the Boston attacks deserve Rolling Stone cover stories, though I no longer feel that Rolling Stone deserves them."

A host of celebs have come out in SUPPORT of Trayvon Martin in the wake of George Zimmerman's ACQUITTAL in the shooting death of the Florida teen.

While performing in Ireland, legendary rocker, Bruce Springsteen dedicated his song "American Skin (41 Shots)" to George Zimmerman's 17-year-old shooting victim, saying, "We'll send this as a letter back home for justice for Trayvon Martin."

Springsteen famously wrote "American Skin" in 1999, accusing the NYPD officers who shot and killed Amadou Diallo of racism. The song's lyrics include:
