[video] Posted: 03 Oct 2013 03:48 PM PDT  Washington (CNN) -- Police near the U.S. Capitol opened fire on Thursday on a car being chased by authorities, hitting a woman driving the vehicle that also contained a child, an intelligence source told CNN. The child appeared to be uninjured, according to the source and witnesses. Capitol Police said an officer was injured in a crash during the afternoon chase that began near the White House. The chaotic scene, with gunfire erupting near the heart of the U.S. government, brought a swarm of emergency vehicles and caused Congress and surrounding offices to be temporarily locked down. Representatives and senators were in the buildings. House and Senate sessions were immediately suspended. Police also closed Pennsylvania Avenue in front of the White House. [video] Posted: 03 Oct 2013 12:04 PM PDT  Washington (CNN) - Emergency vehicles swarmed the area of the U.S. Capitol on Thursday after an order given over the speaker system told people to shelter in place because of an active shooting situation. CNN Chief Congressional Correspondent Dana Bash reported that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said there was one person injured Sen. Bob Casey, D-Pa., told reporters he was walking from the Capitol to the Senate Russell Office Building across the street when he noticed several police officers driving fast up Constitution Avenue on motorcycles. "Within seconds of that," Casey said, "we heard three, four, five pops," which he assumed were gunshots. He said police ordered Casey and nearby tourists to crouch behind a car for protection. In about two minutes, he said, the officers moved everyone into the Capitol. FBI agents rushed to the scene and Senate Sergeant at Arms Terrance Gainer said: "There are reports of injuries."
