| #UConn BBALL STAR #ShabazzNapier "I go to bed starving" comment SPARKS CONTROVERSY & Debate!? Posted: 09 Apr 2014 06:45 AM PDT  Should COLLEGE athletes be PAID!? Some say yes, and after a statement made by Shabazz Napier of the NCAA CHAMPIONS UCONN, one would say 'YES'. Napier made a comment along the lines that there are MANY NIGHTS he goes to bed 'STARVING' because he has no money for FOOD! SAY WHAT!!!?? With all the money the athletic department makes off of him, they don't allow for MEAL PLANS!!??!? According to CNN: The remark got the attention of state lawmakers in Connecticut, who are now exploring legislative ways to allow athletes at UConn, a state institution, to unionize — much like athletes are attempting at Northwestern University.  Rep. Matthew Lesser said he and other state lawmakers are considering legislation. Unlike at Northwestern, a private institution governed by the National Labor Relations Board, Connecticut law governs whether employees at a public institution can unionize. "He says he's going to bed hungry at a time when millions of dollars are being made off of him. It's obscene," Lesser said. "This isn't a Connecticut problem. This is an NCAA problem, and I want to make sure we're putting pressure on them to treat athletes well." Napier recently called the Northwestern union ruling "kind of great" and said that although he appreciates his basketball scholarship, it doesn't cover all of his expenses. He went on to say: "I don't feel student-athletes should get hundreds of thousands of dollars, but like I said, there are hungry nights that I go to bed and I'm starving," he said. Asked whether he felt like an employee — a key distinction cited in the labor board's Northwestern ruling — the Huskies point guard responded, "I just feel like a student-athlete, and sometimes, like I said, there's hungry nights and I'm not able to eat and I still got to play up to my capabilities. … When you see your jersey getting sold — it may not have your last name on it — but when you see your jersey getting sold and things like that, you feel like you want something in return." CNN's calls to UConn's athletic department were not immediately returned Monday, though the Huskies played the University of Kentucky Wildcats in the NCAA men's basketball finals in Arlington, Texas, that night. | #SingleLadies REVIVED! 4th Season picked up by BET! [details] Posted: 09 Apr 2014 06:22 AM PDT  At the 11th hour the canceled VH1's 'Single Ladies' gets a STAY of EXECUTION. BET has stepped in to save the day. 'Single Ladies' was canceled by VH1 back in February, but just a few weeks after the 'last' episode aired on VH1, we get the news that the show will LIVE ON! BET's Centric has GREEN LIGHTED a fourth season much to the delight to the show's legions of fans!! Get the DETAILS after the JUMP! The FANS RALLIED and BET's CENTRIC listened and has revived the popular show! The music and entertainment themed cable network has inked Queen Latifah and Shakim Compere's Flavor Unit Entertainment -- which produces Single Ladies -- to a new co-production deal that includes a fourth season of the dramedy. "We are thrilled to be working once again with Flavor Unit Entertainment and Queen Latifah. She does it all and we are happy to have her join us as a creative force as we continue to grow Centric into a premiere destination for African-American women. We couldn't be more excited about what's ahead," BET Networks chairman and CEO Debra L. Lee said.  Never underestimate the power and more importantly the BUYING POWER of any particular demographic, especially if they undeserved! "At more than 10 million strong, and in control of $20 billion in buying power, the African-American woman is an increasingly powerful, yet often overlooked consumer. No other network has embraced her with content designed specifically for her -- until now," said Louis Carr, BET Networks president of broadcast and media sales. "Centric is the first network to deliver the programming that celebrates, inspires and addresses her unique perspective." (Source) No word on when the production will begin on the 4th season or what direction it will take. Season 3 which averaged 2.2 million viewers, all but TIED things up at the end of season 3.
