With hit movies like 'The Butler', and '12 years a Slave' breaking BOX OFFICE records, 'SLAVERY' is 'IN' this season. And now on the small screen, the groundbreaking mini-series 'Roots' is set go get a REMAKE. And you wonder HOW such an ICONIC piece of POP CULTURE be REMADE?? Get the DETAILS here! via: HipHopWired Deadline reports that the History channel acquired the rights to Roots from Mark Wolper, son of Roots executive producer David L. Wolper. Also, the rights to Alex Haley's book, Roots: The Saga Of An American Family, that the 12-hour mini-series was based on, were acquired from the late writer's estate. Wolper will serve as an executive producer but a writer has not yet been chosen. The remake will draw from the book and the mini-series, which starred a then unknown LeVar Burton, who portrayed a slave named Kunta Kinte, as well as a plethora of notable Black actors like Ben Vereen, Cicely Tyson and Louis Gossett, Jr. "We would like to revive that cultural icon for a new audience," History EVP and GM Dirk Hoogstra told Deadline. The timing couldn't be better — the topic of slavery is very much on people's minds through a string of popular movies including last year's Django Unchained,this year's Oscar hopeful 12 Years A Slave, and with Lee Daniels' The Butler also touching on the subject. Add to that the success of other recent historical films like Lincoln. "History in general is in the zeitgeist, which is great for us being a network whose name is History," Hoogstra said. The cable network has played a major role in bringing history to the forefront of pop culture over the past couple of years with its blockbuster miniseries Hatfields & McCoys and The Bible as well as series The Vikings. Posted: 05 Nov 2013 09:00 PM PST  I've been TELLING you since the beginning, that the 'Love & Hip Hop NY' cast's storylines seemed QUITE CONTRIVED, and now we have PROOF from an ACTUAL cast member! For those that are actually tuning in, you may have noticed that newcomer, Peter Gunz is involved in a SORDID love triangle with his WIFE and his ARTIST at the same damn time! Almost like a STEVIE J. 'bus' scenario but not NEARLY as SMOOTH. Viewers cried FOUL when this storyline was first SHOVELED down their THROATS. How could a MAN lead a DOUBLE LIFE KNOWING that cameras were following his EVERY MOVE!?  Well, Peter Gunz EXPLAINS to 'Sway in the Morning', that he was just giving the VIEWERS what they wanted on camera to get PAID!! Here is what he had to say: via Bossip: "Sh*t was gonna blow up anyway. I was going to get busted. Why not get paid to get busted." "I'm fu**ed up out here. Last time I went to the ATM, that sh*t told me to get the f**k outta here.
